Situated northwest of Johannesburg’s bustling city centre lays one of the most prestigious golf clubs in South African history – The Royal Johannesburg and Kensington Golf Course. At almost 130 years old, the club is one of the oldest in South Africa and received its royal prefix in 1931 when King George the Fifth visited South Africa.
Two years after this famous visit the second of the club’s two legendary courses was born and is known, quite widely, as the East Course.
The East course has gone on to host no less than seven South African Opens and has played host to a large number of other important national and international events. Golfers Digest and the Complete Golfer both consistently rank the east course in South Africa’s top ten golf courses and this is no easy accomplishment.

Here, every year in December, the “Million Dollar Challenge”, is hosted by Gary Player and is one of the world’s richest golf tournaments. Many of the game’s superstars have graced the fairways of this course.
Built-in an extinct volcanic crater, this immaculate golfing paradise conforms to the stringent US PGA specifications and was recently named South Africa’s Best Golf Course in the World Golf Awards 2015. Stretching over more than 7000 metres, it definitely is one of the world’s longest golf courses.
It has been cleverly designed with imaginatively placed bunkers and multiple tees to give both novice and skilled golfers a satisfying round. The Kikuyu fairways and bent-grass greens offer a near-perfect playing surface.

After breakfast, play The Lost City Golf Course. The Lost City Golf Course at Sun City has been designed by the renowned South African golfing legend Gary Player and aims to provide the ultimate challenges in golf.
Nothing beats playing a round of golf at an 18-hole desert-style golf course surrounded by spectacular views across South Africa’s bushveld.
This is what you experience at the Lost City Golf Course. The course is exceptional in combining various themes such as desert, mountains, and parkland.
Carved out of the wild African bush, the course covers over 100 hectares of land of which the exciting water features take up 28000 square metres. There are undulating bay view grass fairways and large bent grass greens.
What makes this course especially dramatic is the presence of 20 live Nile crocodiles in a water hazard at the 13th hole! Stunning views are guaranteed at just about every hole, making your golfing experience not only satisfying as a challenge but also a visual delight.

With play being restricted to hotel residents, members and their guests, the course rarely seems crowded and you can enjoy a peaceful and comfortable round of golf at your pace. Although set in the same surroundings as its better-known counterparts, the Outeniqua has developed an individual personality rivalling the others.
As with all courses at Fancourt, there are a variety of tees from which to choose to play, ensuring that golfers are unlikely to ever feel overpowered by the course. Excellent water features and creeks interspersed with uphill and downhill challenges and excellent bunkering (recently renovated) are all augmented in the charm and challenge by the colourful flora to be seen throughout the course. Spend the rest of the day at leisure.

After breakfast, make your way to The Links Course at Fancourt for your round of golf. An inland-links style challenge to test the best in the world is how the Fancourt Links was visualised at its conception.
Designed by the legendary Gary Player and considered to be his design masterpiece, the Links at Fancourt recreates the classic courses of Scotland and Ireland in a typically South African setting with the majestic Outeniqua mountains serving as a dramatic backdrop. Conceived on a former airport site, the resulting aura is that of a pure links layout in spite of its inland location, with only the climate and the mountains serving as reminders that the golfer is not in the British Isles.
Having hosted the 2003 Presidents Cup (which ended in a dramatic tie between Tiger Woods and Ernie Els with Nelson Mandela in attendance) and the 2005 SAA Open, playing at The Links is a very, very special experience. Enjoy a 3-course farewell dinner at Henry White’s restaurant at Fancourt Hotel.

Explore the second oldest town in South Africa and walk down the canal-lined avenues, in the shade of giant oak trees and beautifully preserved historic buildings, cafes, boutiques and art galleries.
Simon van der Stel – the Governor of the Cape Colony at the time – established the town in 1679 and the remaining Cape Dutch architecture gives a sense of this Dutch colonial history. However, ten years later in 1690, French Huguenot refugees settled in the area and planted grapes in the fertile valleys around Stellenbosch giving way to the birth of the South African Wine Industry.
Enjoy a wine tasting before continuing on the tour. Travel over the Helshoogte Pass to the town of Franschoek, which was also subsequently settled by the French Huguenots in the 17th century. Billed as the gourmet capital of South Africa, this charming town, in the most picturesque valley, retains a strong French Huguenot style represented in the longstanding architecture and lifestyle.
Enjoy a wine tasting before taking the time to enjoy the fabled culinary skills of the Franschhoek chefs at one of the many award-winning restaurants (to own account). Onward to Paarl, one of the Capes’s first farming districts. The town is set at the foot of the cluster of remarkable granite domes from which it takes its name.
Renowned for its haunting scenic beauty and deep viticulture and fruit-growing heritage, Paarls fertile soil and Mediterranean-like climate provided the perfect conditions for farming. Settlers planted orchards, vegetable gardens, and grape vineyards, thus rooting Paarls long and continuing history as a major wine and fruit producing area of South Africa.
Enjoy a final wine tasting before returning to the bustle of the city after an enthralling day in the countryside. The tour ends with drop off at your hotel.

Without question, Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club is one of the most prestigious golf clubs in South Africa.
The Club’s two courses are both ranked as major achievers in the awards lists. The courses are kept consistently in excellent shape and common sense has always prevailed in design and construction.
The fun factor has not been forgotten and although the courses will test the lower handicappers, risk and reward abound for golfers who play for the pure enjoyment of the game.
Designed by golfing legend Gary Player, home to the annual Nedbank Golf Challenge, with the first prize of $2-million, the course has hosted some of the biggest names in golf.
It is has been cleverly designed with imaginatively placed bunkers and multiple tees to give both novice and skilled golfers a satisfying round.
The Kikuyu fairways and bent-grass greens offer a near-perfect playing surface.
Some ten years after the completion of the Gary Player Country Club, the popularity of the Sun City Resort and its many attractions demanded that another golf course be built.
Again Gary Player was commissioned to lay out the course, his challenge being to create a very different golfing experience. A mere two-minute ride by shuttle bus from the Gary Player Country Club is the imposing Palace of the Lost City. In its shadow lies the legendary golf course.
As with its older twin, the Lost City’s course required extensive earthmoving, yet amazingly, the finished product appears to have existed as long as the mythical Lost City.
The course defies being bracketed into any particular genre – having touches of the mountain, desert, and even a brand of African parkland in its makeup.
Outeniqua is one of two majestic 18-hole Parkland layouts at Fancourt. Designed by legendary Grand Slam golfer Gary Player, it is similar in character to its sibling Montagu, and its challenging design and fine conditioning will ensure an excellent test for all levels of golfers.
As with all courses at Fancourt, there are a variety of tees from which to choose to play, ensuring that golfers are unlikely to ever feel overpowered by the course.
Sculpted into what Gary Player has described as his greatest feat as a course designer, The Links is the golfing hallmark of the Fancourt estate.
Featuring an undulating, windswept terrain and dune-style landscape, the course is the collaborative handiwork of golfing icon, Gary Player, course designer, Phil Jacobs and Fancourt’s owner, Dr Hasso Plattner.
The Links is a private Club, limited tee times are available for guests staying at Fancourt Hotel or The Manor House at Fancourt.
Enjoy our Championship Links style Golf Course with its traditional style and an ocean breeze off the ocean. On calm days you can play your normal lofted shot or on windy days you can use the firm turf to play low running shots, beneath the wind.
Either way, we are sure you will enjoy the challenge around this 18-hole golf course. Atlantic Beach Links Golf Courses have been built with a serious commitment to the preservation of the indigenous fauna and flora.
Compared to other golf courses in Cape Town, on completion of your 18 holes around our course you will agree that it is the combination of good golf in unsurpassed natural surroundings that make Atlantic Beach’s Links Golf Course a unique golfing experience.
