Set within the township of Kota Kemuning, Kota Permai Golf & Country Club has impressed Malaysia golf visitors since its opening in 1998. The 18-hole Kota Permai championship course designed by top international architect, Ross Watson and is one of the best golf courses in Asia.
Bearing testimony to the top status of Kota Permai Golf & Country Club is its impressive portfolio of professional golf championships. From 1998 to 2002 and once again in 2004, Kota Permai hosted the Asian Tour Volvo Masters. Kota Permai was the venue for qualifying event for the World Cup of Golf in 2007. The next year Kota Permai provided a worthy battleground for the co-sanctioned European Tour Malaysian Open.
With success comes recognition and, over the years, Kota Permai has earned numerous awards including Malaysia’s Number One Golf Course and Most Beautiful Hole by Golf Malaysia magazine in 2001/2002/2004/2005/2006. And it did not stop there – in Golf Malaysia magazine’s readers’ poll 2007/2008, Kota Permai voted the country’s Best Golf Course. In 2008, Kota Permai was named as the Best Golf & Country Club of the Year in the Hospitality Asia Platinum Awards.
n 2004, Kota Permai Golf & Country Club completed renovations included greens rebuilding to United States Golf (USGA) specifications, upgrading of tee boxes, adding more vertical railway-sleepers to the bunkers, and expanding the clubhouse. Facilities on offer include two-tier driving range, excellent practice greens for chipping, putting and bunker play, plus a golf academy. Facilities are on par with other world-renowned golf courses.
At 6741 meters from the tips, the TPC Kuala Lumpur East Course is parkland style, with beautiful vibrant-colored landscaping. This 18-hole championship ground was voted 4th best course in all Malaysia in 2010. The design takes full advantage of the beauty of the land and makes you feel in harmony with nature. It offers natural grasses and wetlands and provides natural habitats to numerous species of wildlife and birds. The East course also has a pleasantly undulating parkland character, with several nicely elevated tee-boxes, providing a good look at the demands ahead. The lightly tree-lined, contoured fairways provide good definition to each hole, some of them requiring driving accuracy.
Within its 27-hole layout, Tiara Melaka contains the superb Woodlands-nine, a good nine-hole loop of undulating, through the jungle golf. With dense jungle lining the way, and a few monkeys probably looking on, this immensely attractive rainforest environment contains many pleasantly undulating and very picturesque holes.
The par-4 3rd is a challenging gem, requiring a strategic decision on the tee, either lay-up and leave a longer approach shot, or drive over a stream that diagonally crosses the fairway. The Meadow-nine gives substantial support to the Woodlands; although very well laid out, it doesn’t quite provide the same level of naturalness or tropical scenery. The best stretch of holes on the Meadow-nine is the final three, with plenty of water to cross, towering trees avoided (on the fairway at 17) and a lake missed along the right side of the 18th.
Located near the airport on once a 130-acre hilly rugged and rocky jungle, the Penang Golf Club (former Bukit Jambul Country Club) has established itself as one of Malaysia’s top golf clubs right from the opening in 1984. Thereafter, course upgrades and renovations have enabled Penang Golf Club to keep its leadership position among Penang golf courses. In fact, Penang Golf Club was the venue for the 31st Malaysian Open in 1992 which was won by Vijay Singh. That same year the Penang golf club was rated at the 6th best in Malaysia and since then many other events and professional golfers have graced the Penang Golf Club fairways. Penang Golf Club provides a stunning panoramic view of the island, with the impressive Penang Bridge and mainland Malaysia in the distance. Villas, apartment blocks and the huge Equatorial Hotel provide most of the backdrop to this very tight and often dramatically undulating, parkland golf course. Although surrounded by the sights and sounds of the city, there are also enough jungle clad hills around to remind you that Penang Island is lush and tropical, much favored by holiday-makers and beach-goers.
The 18 hole 5,763 meter, par-72 golf course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and is fairly compact. Around the often smallish greens, Trent Jones has chosen to ‘hide’ many of the bunkers, giving them grassy faces that blend into the fairways and semi-rough.
The Penang Golf Club layout favors accuracy instead of distance off the tee. The sharply doglegging, dramatically downhill opening par-4, provides a clear signal of the tightness of things to come, while also highlighting the excellent presentation and maintenance standards you’ll find here. By the time you reach the super-tight par-4 4th, you’ll either have the measure of the course, or it will have the measure of you.
Gunung Raya Golf Resort located at the foothills of the majestic Gunung Celebration Mountain. The Max Wexler designed Langkawi golf course covers 300 acres of former rubber plantation land. Gunung Raya has beautiful panoramic views and an impressive landscape. The Langkawi golf course opened for play in 1998 and hosted key amateur golf tournaments over the years.
Constant renovation keeps the course in good order, and almost everywhere there are signs of on-going maintenance. Even the golf cart path lined yellow trumpet flowers and wild grasses. Most of the Gunung Raya holes offer a scenic view of rolling hills and distant mountains. For example, the first hole from its elevated tee is a slight dogleg right with a great view of Gunung Raya and the whole golf course.
The fairways are wide, which makes it easy to keep the ball in play. Bermuda grass ensures balls sit nicely. There’s not much OB or hazards. The back nine has more water.
Some of the most notable holes include the 10th, a 500 meter par-5. The dogleg right hole has water running the entire length on the left while a hill serves as an obstacle to choose the tiger line towards the right. Littered with bunkers the fairway leads to a large, relatively flat green.
The Els Club Teluk Datai is being touted as Southeast Asia’s most exotic golf experience and opened for play in 2014. It was immediately voted the ‘World’s Best New Golf Course’ at the inaugural World Golf Awards, part of the World Travel Awards – known as The Oscars of the travel industry. Located amongst some of Malaysia’s most spectacular landscape, the course is nestled within a centuries-old rain forest with towering lush tropical foliage, offering the finest golfing experience to avid golfers. Coupled with the renowned service standards and course conditions provided by global golf management leaders Troon Golf, The Els Club Teluk Datai has set its sights high, with a clear aim to redefine Southeast Asian Golf. There are many striking features to the Els Club Teluk Datai that make it unique, be it the proximity to both a million year old rainforest, the indigenous plants, the Macaque and Dusky Leaf Monkeys that roam the flanks of the golf course as well as the picturesque shores of the Andaman sea.
