Nikanti Golf Club is a one-of-a-kind unique 18-hole track, situated in Nakhon Pathom province west of Bangkok. The work of Thai golf course designer and architect Piraporn Namatra of Golf East, Nikanti is revolutionary in more ways than one. Nikanti sits in the fresh air among former rice paddies.
However, the Bangkok golf course is almost the complete opposite of what one usually finds around the city. For a start, it measures a short 6,850 yards from the black tees. Then there is the routing. Rather than having a traditional front and back nine, Nikanti is made up of three loops of six, each one starting and ending at the main clubhouse.
Finally, each circuit comprises two par-3s, two par-4s, and two par-5s. Having an equal number of par-3, par-4, and par-5 holes is somewhat controversial, but why not? Par-72 is still on offer, and it gives golfers the chance to play a wide variety of holes through the round.
Riverdale Golf Club is one of a few excellent Bangkok golf courses. Jonathan Morrow and Al Tikkanen designed and like Red Mountain, their other high-profile Phuket golf course, Riverdale makes good use of intelligent routing and elevation changes.
Riverdale may not at first glance look like the most menacing test of golf. However, it’s all an illusion. The landscape includes several large lakes which were dredged to create the hills that surround the golf course and frame most of the holes.
Beyond the perimeter, though there’s not much to look at; factories and small villages dominate. However, from opening tee-shot to the gently sloping downhill opener, the challenges and considerable charm of these immaculately groomed links will quickly assert themselves.
A vast open space with panoramic views of Burmese mountain ranges in the distance sets the stage for this masterpiece. A large river bisects the course and adds to the natural scenery.
It takes around 30 minutes to reach the site from Kanchanaburi town or 2 hours from Bangkok. Grand Prix makes excellent use of significant mounding and undulations through the fairways and greens. Many holes have split fairways offering golfers both a more challenging and a relaxing approach to the greens. Multi-tiered greens have lots of breaks, so it pays to select the correct club for each approach shot; otherwise, 3-putts or worse is likely.
Opened in 1994, Royal Ratchaburi is one of the most spectacular Kanchanaburi golf courses. The hilly terrain and excellent views of Burmese mountain ranges make for aesthetically pleasing, yet challenging golf.
Greens are well-kept, which is unusual for courses in such remote settings. Royal Ratchaburi fairways follow the contours of the hills and play for the most part up and down.
The front nine has mostly wider fairways than the back nine, which is considered more challenging. There are some excellent, but short par-3 holes that require precise shots over deep canyons.
The traditional Jack Nicklaus designed Springfield Royal Country Club located off the Hua Hin bypass road is one of the best Hua Hin golf courses, and as good as they come.
The course at Springfield has been designed to meet the high demands of a recognised championship golf course, and yet it remains an enjoyable challenge for golfers of all standards. Each hole has a minimum of five tees to play from, but only the brave, and those regularly rub shoulders with the world’s best will venture from the black tee.
Water hazards periodically come into play, and each hole presents its challenge and character requiring finesse or restraint. Accuracy is needed at all times as the rough comprises of a series of hillocks and holes lined by a forest of mature trees.
Banyan Golf Club in Hua Hin opened in October 2008. Immediately following, the course was awarded 2009 Best New Course in Asia-Pacific by the readers of Asian Golf Monthly. Since then Banyan Golf Club course, clubhouse, and staff have consistently claimed the ‘Top 3 in Asia’ awards and have been featured in the ‘Rolex Top 1000’ in the World.
Thailand golf course architect Pirapon Namatra from Golf East designed the world-class 18-hole championship golf course and is known to be one of the most natural in the country. The course provides spectacular mountain and ocean views from almost all of the holes and is one of the best layouts in Hua Hin.
Each hole has six tee boxes making the course more or less challenging depending on each golfer’s ability and tee selection. Strategically placed water hazards, waste bunkers, and sand traps are spread out throughout the course. Significant use of native pineapple groves makes local fruits come into play if straying too far off the fairways. Be careful, pineapple plants are sharp and scratch easily.
.
one of the 100 best golf courses in the world) Black Mountain was transformed from lush jungle and pineapple plantations and located around 25 minutes west of Hua Hin.
Set in a valley surrounded by huge black granite rock-covered mountains, the Hua Hin golf course was the site for Asian PGA tour events in 2009 and 2010 and the Europe versus Asia match play Royal Trophy in 2011. In 2012 and each year since Black Mountain was selected as one of the 100 best golf courses outside the USA by Golf Digest magazine.
In 2014 Black Mountain hosted The Thailand Classic, the first European Tour event to be staged in Thailand. The Thailand Classic also held in 2015 and 2016, is now a major fixture on the European and Asian Tours.
Also outstanding is the signature 11th hole, a par-3 over water to an island green. With no bail-out area and an all-water carry, club selection is critical to a dry landing and birdie chance. Otherwise, the generous drop area to the left of the green minimizes high scores and at least provides an excellent “wet bogey” opportunity for most Hua Hin golfers.
